Digital art has an increasingly low barrier to entry. However, because it is so accessible and straightforward on the surface, it is easy to overlook ways to optimize the tools further.
Just as with any traditional medium, your digital workspace needs to be tuned for the best results and enjoyment. A master oil painter takes great pride in his studio space, finely crafted brushes, and high-grade pigments. While they may not make or break his ability to do great work, they certainly contribute, likewise, with digital, many minor frustrations can be avoided, techniques to speed up your progress, and tricks that greatly enhance your experience.
These are just my personal preferences and recommendations as they relate to Photoshop and the tools I use. Follow as you wish
Essential Tools
The topmost folder contains only the most essential brushes so that you won’t need to go searching for them.
Quick Kit
The Quick Kit contains brushes for a full range of effects. This is where I start most of my quick paintings and concepts.
Line Brushes
A variety of line qualities for drawing and mark-making.
Painterly Brushes
This is the largest folder, with several subfolders. Here you will find a vast array of brushes with all sorts of characters.
Mixer Brushes
These function like normal brushes, but they also allow you to “load” the brushes with any variety of colors. Simply hold ALT to sample from any point on your canvas. This will select an area the size and shape of your brush. The Blend and Smudge Mixers are great for blending and smudging!
Dry Media Brushes
These are my go-to drawing brushes, designed based on my favorite traditional tools. You’ll find a broad range of pencils, charcoal, pastels, and more.
Dirty Ink Set
For the love of inking, but with the advantage of editing. Here you will find a vast range of tools for all manner of inking styles and effects.
Special Effects
Here you’ll find a huge variety of effect brushes. Particles, spatter, foliage, texture, clouds, and more… These are useful tools for both illustration and concept art.
Smudge Tools
I use these as quick blending tools. Also great for softening edges.
