Smooth Subdivision enlarges the geometry of your design by adding polygons. Linear Subdivision is performed prior to Smooth subdivision and is employed to highlight edges.
Tested using R19 and the R18, R17, and The R16 (in R17, R16, the linear subdivision is not available, try using curvilinear subdivision instead)
